Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese method for charring timber, is an excellent way to protect timber from moisture, pests, and heat. This week we were beginning to use this product, 18mm by 120mm burnt Australian hardwood, for internal walls in the bathrooms. Unfortunately we needed to trim the timber to ensure that we could fit it into the areas we had prepared for it, which left some of the timber un-burnt. Using a propane gas torch, we touched up the exposed timber once cut, and it was fit for purpose. Overall, despite finishing the work day looking like we had been working in a coal mine, this timber was a pleasure to work with and offered an interesting opportunity to test out our skills on the blow torch.
